Today the Zapatista's are the most documented indigenous movement
in the history of the world with hundreds of videos, films, web-sites, and books
created by people from the outside. The CMP has provided these same indigenous
communities with the technology and training to tell their own stories from
their own perspectives.
The CMP gave its first video production workshop in February 1998 in a Zapatista
autonomous region. The youth who attended were chosen by their local indigenous
authorities as community representatives who would learn this skill for the
benefit of their communities.
Indigenous youth with little formal education, and often working without reliable electricity, have produced videos on agricultural collectives, fair trade coffee, autonomous education, traditional medicine, women’s collectives and the history of their struggle for land.
Since the first workshops in 1998, the CMP has supplied 55 video cameras to 50 indigenous communities in Chiapas. Close to 200 indigenous youth have been trained in basic camera usage. There are 10 advanced video makers who have been with the project since the beginning who produce the videos that the CMP distributes worldwide. These video makers now teach all the introductory production and post-production courses in their regions in their native languages. Their videos have been screened at over 40 film and video festivals worldwide. And since 1998, the CMP has distributed close to 5,000 videos.
The CMP has a media center in the town of San Cristobal de las Casas. The media center is equipped with non-linear editing systems, digital production equipment, computers, internet access and a video library.
There is a network of regional coordinators who represent four regions in Chiapas.
The CMP is now in the process of turning the project over to the communities in Chiapas. The regional coordinators are learning the administration of the project. The CMP is currently fundraising to build four regional video centers in Chiapas that will be fully equipped with digital production and post-production equipment.
